It’s the first time I've enjoyed a terrible movie.

"A nightmare on Elm Street" and "Friday the 13th" are cult classics (albeit cheesy ones) that remain popular among hardcore fans always clamoring for more. I was  never a big fan of either franchise, so naturally I am not excited about the possibility of a Freddy or Jason sequel. That terror of a movie Jason X was the final straw for me. I believed that franchise had hit rock bottom and essentially died for good. And forget about Elm Street, there hasn't been a Nightmare sequel since 1994. Enter Freddy VS Jason. This movie is a creation from New Line cinema combining two of horror movies' most popular and classic villains Freddy Kruger (A nightmare on Elm street) and Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th). In development since 1998, it's been a long time coming. Studios are finally giving in to public demand, making movies combined with separate franchise characters. (the trend looks like it wont change: 20th Century Fox has Alien VS Predator in the works and Marvel is considering combining some of their popular franchise characters in a movie together). When buzz first broke of this movie back in 2002, many hardcore fans were excited about the possibility of a Freddy VS Jason face-off. For the rest of us, it was just an excuse for New Line to make money. Although the last statement is certainly true as with any studio, Freddy VS Jason is not the bomb I thought it would have been.

Fundamentally this movie is bad: awful dialog, a terrible, unforgiving plot and amateur acting. But I’ve never enjoyed a movie as bad as this. On the surface Freddy VS Jason is an awful movie with most of it being so bad, it laughable. But I’m guessing this was the studio's intentions. Under all the terrible stuff lies a movie made for hardcore fans of both franchises. Like it or not, Freddy VS Jason is a tribute to two of horror movies best villains and I am glad they made it.

As I said before, I am not a big fan of either franchise, but I have seen at least one of each. For someone who knows little about each series, this movie wasn't so bad, in fact it was quite fun to watch. The showdown between the two characters ranks up there with many of the great battles I’ve seen. Don’t get me wrong, if you try to take this movie seriously you are going to be very disappointed. It not scary and it wont have you jumping out your seat. But if you sit back and relax, you might find yourself enjoying this movie a little too much.

The good: Robert Englund was very good as Freddy Kruger, he pretty much is the reason this movie was entertaining. Englund is Freddy Kruger, and no one else can play that role. The humor surrounding Freddy’s character is also excellent. Little nuances will tickle you as the crappy plot prods along. Without Englund’s talents and Freddy’s scripted humor, this movie would be an absolute bomb. Yeah, Jason was pretty good himself, but in a movie you can’t take seriously, it would have been a major loss without Freddy. Stuntman Ken Kirzinger was also solid as Jason (although he didn’t do much acting; still whatever he did was good enough). There is a bit of comedy (besides with Freddy) in the flick which also adds to the value of the film. Hardcore fans have told me this movie is as good as it gets and any Freddy and/or Jason fans will adore the details of the movie. Obviously if you’re hardcore you can appreciate these things.

The bad: Oh where can I start: the plot, story, supporting cast... I can go on for day about how cheesy everything else is in the movie. If you’re looking for some cheap scares or thrills forget about it. It seems these things were the only thing the studio forgot to put into the movie. But how could they? The movie was too funny to be frightening even if the humor is a bit raw and crude. Still, it’s obvious the writers and director Ronny Yu intended some of these things as pass downs from the previous Freddy and Jason flicks. They could have tried to take the movie more seriously, but it that's only one alternative to many possibilities.

  • Execution - 2: the story and plot are downright awful. Don’t look into getting a good story with good pacing. It gets an extra point for adding details for the hardcore fan.
  • The Stars - 4: England was excellent as Freddy. There can be no other who can play this character. Ken Kirzinger for Jason was also solid.
  • The cast - 1: I've never seen such awful acting in a movie before. This may have been intended, but I didn’t give a damn about them (and they are suppose to be the good guys). Kill them all and the pretty one too!
  • Special effects - 3: you could tell the CGI was low budget, but there wasn’t much of it. The action was for the most part convincing, you won’t complain much about the effects.
  • Tilt - 3: not bad, even though I was not a hardcore fan, I still enjoyed the flick.

Unrivaled rating: 2.8

Overall: with bad dialog and terrible plotting, movie critics slammed this movie. But with the mega showdown of two super villains, Freddy VS Jason delivers for its hardcore fans and even has something for the casual fan. If you’re looking for something to scare you or more serious stuff you'll definitely want to look elsewhere. It’s a great pop corn flick and nothing more. I’m looking forward to the Jason VS Freddy VS Michael Myers movie in the works. That’s too much killing for one flick!
