Chapter 16 - Versus!! Buggy Pirate Fleet

Nami is really curious about Luffy now. He got knocked through a building, defeated a giant lion, and now he inflated himself into a balloon and bounced back a cannon ball that destroys sections of a town.

Buggy and Kabaji come out of the debris of the building. They used other crew members as shields for the blast. Mohji wakes up out of the debris as well, and sees Kabaji using Richie as a shield. Mohji gets angry, but then spots Luffy and tells Buggy that he’s eaten a Devil’s Fruit and is a rubber man. Buggy is mad because he was not told this earlier, and he throws Mohji at Luffy. Luffy kicks Mohji in the face in midair (poor Mohji).

Kabaji charges at Luffy, but is stopped by Zoro’s sword. Kabaji notes that Zoro’s injury is still bothering him, and then blows fire in his face. He then kicks Zoro right in his wound. Zoro bawls in pain, and Kabaji does a trick where he blows dust all around. He then tries to attack Zoro with his sword, Zoro blocks, and Kabaji kicks his wound again.

Nami is worried and wonders how Luffy can just stand there and let Zoro get beat up. Zoro then gets up and punches Kabaji in the face. He says, “What a loser. Did you have fun hitting my wound?” Zoro then takes his own sword, and cuts his wound. Zoro declares, “My goal is to become an invincible swordsman. I hope you are satisfied now that I have given you an advantage. I will give you a lesson on how you and I are different.”

Chapter 17 - Level

Zoro boasts that he’s never lost a sword fight in his life (LIES.). Kabaji tells Zoro not to worry, because if Zoro loses he can say it was because of his injury. On the other hand, Zoro says, Zoro could say that he won even though he was injured.

Nami says that Buggy hides his treasure in the storage room of the ruined building. She will get the treasure and says she doesn’t care whether Luffy wins or loses. However, she says, if Luffy can get the map from Buggy, she will join him.

Kabaji throws a bunch of little tops at Zoro, who easily knocks them away. Kabaji then goes high into the air, and points his sword down to stab Zoro. Buggy then shoots his hand towards Zoro’s leg and holds it, so Kabaji can hit him. Luffy then stomps on Buggy’s hand, telling him not to get involved with Zoro’s fight. Zoro dodges Kabaji’s attack and says that he is tired and that enough is enough. Kabaji boasts that it was about time that Zoro gave up, but Zoro kicks him off of his unicycle. Zoro says that he meant that he was tired of Kabaji’s stupid tricks. Zoro shouts “EVIL KILLER!” and delivers a fatal slash to Kabaji. As he fell, Kabaji wondered why he had to lose to a thief. Zoro says “I’m not a thief, I’m a pirate,” then collapses.

Buggy is shocked that they are pirates. Luffy tells Buggy to give him the Grand Line map, and Buggy obviously declines, stating that Grand Line isn’t a playground for unknown pirates. Luffy says that he will become the Greatest Pirate. Buggy says that he will be the one to obtain the One Piece. Then Luffy tells Buggy to be quiet and fight. Buggy then states that Luffy’s straw hat reminds him of a red haired man he met when he was young…

Chapter 18 - Buggy, The Clown Pirate

"Red hair? Are you talking about Shanks?"

Luffy asks where Shanks is and Buggy refuses to tell Luffy what he knows about Shanks. Luffy says that he will make him tell. Buggy then tells him that he may be made of rubber, but he can't bounce off of knives (and Luffy, the idiot, confirms it). Two knives stick out of Buggy's shoes, and he separates his body at his waist, and sends his legs spiraling toward Luffy. Luffy hops over it  And Buggy notes that while Luffy is in the air, he cannot dodge. Buggy throws tons of knives at Luffy, but Luffy just grabs the side of a house and catapults his way out of the oncoming barrage of knives. Luffy then Gomu Gomu Pistols Buggy, but Buggy dodges easily. Buggy is about to cut Luffy's outstretched arm with a knife, when Luffy uses it to grab a windowsill and catapult himself at Buggy. He shouts, "GOMU GOMU SCYTHE!" as he's about to clothesline Buggy. Buggy separates his head from his body and dodges the clothesline. Luffy slams into a house and Buggy says "You don't have the guts, Rubber Man." Luffy busts out of the ruins of the house.

Nami and Buggy's pirates (who are pretending to be unconscious) can't believe what they are seeing.

Buggy then shoots a hand with a bunch of knives at Luffy and Luffy stops it. He shoots it a second time and it hits Luffy in the side of his face. Luffy's bleeding and is pissed. Buggy asks him if he's mad because he scarred his face, Luffy says he's mad because Buggy made a tiny cut in his straw-hat.Nami is amazed that Luffy is actually mad, because he seems so carefree. Buggy takes advantage of Luffy's fondness for the hat and sends a hand with 3 knives at it, and hits it dead on. Buggy takes the hat and laughs, and Luffy gets pissed. He flashes back to when Shanks gave him the hat. Luffy is determined not to let anything happen to it, and charges toward Buggy, who reveals that he and Shanks used to be crewmates. Buggy separates his head from his body, in order to dodge the oncoming hit, but Luffy kicks him square in the stomach...

Chapter 19 - Evil Fruit

Luffy is mad that there are stab holes in his hat. He grabs Buggy's face and tells him to never say that Shanks and him were friends again. Buggy tries to separate, but Luffy pushes his head back on his body.

Buggy's pirates are getting worried, and Nami realizes that she was supposed to get Buggy's treasure (duh).

At the refugee camp, everyone is worried about Mayor Boodle. An old man says that he will go back to find him alone. The townspeople insist that they go with him to fight for their town.

Meanwhile, Buggy tells Luffy that he hated Shanks because he took away his most precious treasure...

FLASHBACK: Shanks and Buggy

Shanks and Buggy are on their pirate ship fighting about which part of the world is colder: The North or South Pole. The captain hits them both and tells them to stop fighting about something so stupid.

Just then, and enemy ship comes, and Buggy and Shanks prepare to fight. Buggy says he wants to fight to get their treasure. They start the battle, and Buggy finds a treasure map for a huge treasure in the bottom of the sea. Buggy hides it from his crewmates.

The pirates are celebrating their victory over the enemy pirates, and Shanks tells Buggy to come and celebrate, and mentions that there is something interesting that they got from the ship. They both talk about how one day, they will have their own ships, and Buggy asks about the strange treasure they got from the other ship. Shanks says that it is a Devil's Fruit and said that the captain says anyone can eat it if they wanted to. Buggy says that whoever does is stupid. Shanks also says that they could sell it for 1 billion beli. Buggy is ecstatic.

The next day in front of everyone, he eats the fruit. But, he switched the real fruit the day before, so he could take it and sell it. He takes the map and the real Devil's Fruit in his hand and says that he will now be able to have his own crew. Then Shanks sneaks up behind him and he shoves the fruit in his mouth. Shanks leaves, and Buggy is safe again, but Shanks comes again and Buggy mistakenly swallows the fruit. He gets mad at Shanks, and then his map falls into the ocean. He goes after it, and of course, he can't swim. Shanks saves him and brings him onto the ship...

END FLASHBACK.

Buggy says that for 10 years his plans for getting a ship was delayed, plus he couldn't get the huge treasure buried under the sea. He swears that all the treasure on Earth will be his and says that anyone who takes his treasure must die. He flies directly towards Nami...

Chapter 20 - Ways of the Thief

Buggy's top half flies right toward Nami, who is holding his bag of treasure. He lies toward her, then stops, seemingly in pain. That's because Luffy went up to Luffy's lower half and kicked it square in the nuts (ouchies). Luffy tells Nami to drop the treasure and run, and Nami refuses. Buggy separates his body into little pieces and goes after Nami again, but Luffy notices that his feet are still on the ground. He takes them and tickles them. Buggy's head tells Luffy to stop playing, and then Nami takes the bag of treasure and whacks Buggy's head with it. But Buggy uses this opportunity to grab the bag. They both tug at it and Buggy bites it, then takes his hands and tries to stab Nami. Before he can, though, Luffy kicks Buggy in the head, spilling all of the treasure on the floor.

Luffy picks up the Grand Line map, but Buggy is still awake. He brings his body parts together, but finds that he can only summon his head, hands and feet. Nami tied up the rest while Buggy was knocked down  Then Luffy takes his arms and shoves them at Buggy, Hadouken style, and shouts, "GOMU GOMU BAZOOKA!" This sends Buggy flying...
