Terms and Translations (in alphabetical order)

  • Amegakure No Sato: Translates to "Village Hidden in the Rain."
  • Chakra: Inner body energy used to perform specialize Jutsu. A Ninja needs Chakra to perform attacks in battle. Similar to "the force" in Star Wars or CHI/KI in Dragonball.
  • Gaara: Gaara's name is a pun on the term "I love death."
  • Genjutsu: Illusion skills and spells.
  • Hokage: Translates to "Fire Shadow." Leader of the Hidden Leaf Village.
  • Ikura: The Japanese word "Ikura" means Dolphin in English.
  • Iwagakure No Sato: Translates to "Village Hidden in the Stone."
  • Jutsu: Japanese for technique and skills.
  • Kage: The Japanese word for Shadow. Used by leaders of the 5 Great Shinobi Villages it represent themselves as champions of their village. Read the Shinobi Ranks for more info.
  • Kakashi: The Japanese word "Kakashi" means Scarecrow in English.
  • Kazekage: Translates to "Wind Shadow." Leader of the Hidden Sand Village.
  • Kirigakure No Sato: Translates to " Village Hidden in the Mist and Fog."
  • Kinjutsu: Forbidden techniques and skills.
  • Konohagakure No Sato: Translates to " Village Hidden in the Leaves."
  • Kumogakure No Sato: Translates to "Village Hidden in the Clouds."
  • Kusagakure No Sato: Translates to "Village Hidden in the Grass."
  • Mizukage: Translates to "Water Shadow."
  • Ninjutsu: Stealth skills and spells. Usually referred to as the technique and skill set of a Ninja.
  • Otogakure No Sato: Translates to "Village Hidden in the Sounds."
  • Shinobi: Another word for Ninja -  the master of stealth.
  • Raikage:  Translates to "Lighting Shadow."
  • Sakura: The Japanese word "Sakura" means Cherry Blossoms in English.
  • Sensei: The Japanese word for teacher.
  • Sharingan Eye: A form of ocular Ninjutsu born in the eyes and released through the pupil. Gives the user the ability to penetrate and copy any type genjutsu, taijutsu and ninjutsu.
  • Sunagakure No Sato: Translates to "Village Hidden in the Sands."
  • Taijutsu: Body skill and spells.
  • Takigakure No Sato: Translates to "Village Hidden in the waterfalls."
  • Tsuchikage: Translates to Earth Shadow
  • Uzimake: The Japanese word "Uzimake" means Spiral in English. It's connected to Naruto's name as Uzimake Naruto mean Spiral Fishcakes, and they are placed on top of Ramen.

Shinobi Labels and Ranks

  • Kage (Kaa-Jee): Village Leader and Supreme Leader who has equal power of the country as the government leader. It is a Japanese word (pronounced Kaa-Jee) and translates in English to Shadow. Only the leader of a village has the right to call him or herself a Kage, where the end of the title would be KAGE. In the case with the Hokage of Hidden Tree and Leaf Village, the HO stands for FIRE and the KAGE stands for SHADOW. Literally this means FIRE SHADOW, but culturally this means DANCING FLAMES. The other 5 great lands of Shinobi Villages' leaders are Tsuchikage (Earth Shadow - Hidden Stone Village), Kazekage (Wind Shadow - Hidden Sand Village), Mizukage (Water Shadow - Hidden Mist and Fog Village), and Raikage (Lighting Shadow - Hidden Cloud Village).
  • Jonin: Elite Ninja (Upper Ninja). The best Ninja class of the village.
  • Chuinin: Journeyman Ninja (Middle Level Ninja), usually acting as educators and captains of military teams.
  • Genin: Junior Ninja (the Lowest Level Ninja); the first official level of Ninja and still under the training of higher level ninjas. They are usually part of a team and follow orders of Jonin and Chinin.
  • Ninja Academy Students: Apprentices; individuals before the graduation of to a Genin
  • Sage: Ninjas who have achieved legendary status. These Ninjas are capable of destroying entire villages on their own.
  • Anbu: A specialize team of Ninjas often sent out to protect or assassin. They wear the mask of animals to hide their identity.
  • Hunter-Nin: A team of assassins who specific duty is to hunt down and destroy Missing-Nins in order to protect the secrets of their village. They often kill and dispose of the body of the Missing-Nin, which hide secrets that can be revealed if discovered.
  • Missin-Nin: Ninjas who abandoned their villages; they are considered traitors and are hunted down by Hunter-Nins.
